School just started for my kids, but I'm already looking forward to their fall break. That's when we'll take our family vacation because travel bargains abound in the fall.

September through the weekend before Thanksgiving is known as shoulder season, the pause between peak summer and holiday travel seasons. It's a great time to find deals on cruises, resort trips, vacation rentals and international travel. Other perks to this season: The weather usually is nicer and the crowds are much smaller.
