Welcome to Washington, our hometown. For 86 years, the Kiplinger organization has been providing its readers intelligent analysis and judgments from the nation's capital, presented in practical ways that people can understand and use to their benefit. Administrations, lobbyists, companies, employees, and tourists come and go. Yet, beneath the district's pomp and dynamism lies a city of unsung restaurants, cultural events, nightlife, excursions and diversions.

Millions of people are expected to jam Washington to see President-elect Barack Obama sworn into office on January 20, 2009. As has happened during times of dramatic change and national crisis, from the Civil War and World War II to the Inaugurations of John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan, all eyes are on Washington again. A financial meltdown has concentrated great influence and interest in the marbled halls of power. Obama's election as the first African-American president has been a defining moment for the nation, giving hope to millions and enthralling the world.
Indeed, the New York Times has named Washington No. 2 in its list of 44 Top Places to Visit in 2009. (Beirut, Lebanon, was No. 1. We live in interesting times.) So in advance of the Inauguration, we asked Kiplinger's Personal Finance editors and writers for their favorite Washington venues, in hopes you might benefit from their local expertise and wisdom. These are not the usual tourist attractions. Rather, we wanted to give you places you might not be aware of, recommendations off the beaten path.
As founder W. M. Kiplinger once said, glamour and spectacle "do not pay. Far better is understanding." We hope these recommendations enhance your visit to Washington this year, whether it's for the Inauguration, a spring visit to see the cherry blossoms, a fellowship or internship, a new job or a family vacation with the kids or grandchildren.
