What's Your Real MPG?

Beginning with 2008-model vehicles the EPA now incorporates higher speeds, stop-and-go driving, more aggressive acceleration, use of air-conditioning and driving in colder temperatures when calculating fuel efficiency averages. The new formula reduces city mpg by 12%, on average, and highway mileage by 8%, according to EPA estimates. Gas-electric hybrids and some other high fuel economy vehicles could see even bigger reductions.

This Kiplinger tool lets you compare old and new mpg averages for same model cars. As long as the manufacturer has not significantly altered a 2008 model, the estimated changes offer a fair guide to your vehicle's real mpg.
