How to Find a Solar Installer
Use the resources to hire a qualified contractor.
Finding a qualified installer of solar power systems is easier in some states than in others. Twelve states have solar-contractor licensing requirements: Arizona, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Florida, Hawaii, Louisiana, Maine, Michigan, Nevada, Oregon and Utah. Also, some cities, such as Madison, Wis., and Austin, Tex., have their own standards. So if you live in one of these areas, check with your state or local government for a list of qualified contractors.
Another option is to search for installers certified by the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners; you’ll find a list at www.nabcep.org/installer-locator. The certification is well recognized, though not every worthwhile contractor holds it.
Be sure to get several bids, in writing, and check for complaints with the Better Business Bureau before you choose.
