You might save a lot by switching from a contract plan to a prepaid plan. You'll pay a flat rate by the minute, by the day, or both. And the phones are cheap, too, if you don't need a lot of bells and whistles.

Tracfone offers phones starting at $10. ATT Pay As You Go Unlimited Talk charges 10 cents per minute plus $1 for each day the phone is used. Heavy users should explore Boost Mobile, with a $50 monthly plan that includes unlimited talk, texting and Web access. Comparable contract plans range from $100 to $300.
