Earnings recap: Tesla

Tesla's (TSLA) first-quarter report is a key event on the earnings calendar, with the results unveiled after Tuesday's close.

Wall Street got a glimpse of what was to come following the release of the electric vehicle company's delivery numbers earlier this month. In the three months ending March 31, Tesla produced 345,454 vehicles and delivered 323,800 vehicles, representing year-over-year declines of 16% and 12%, respectively.

As for the rest of its results, Tesla said earnings plunged 40% year over year to 27 cents per share while revenue slumped 9% to $19.3 billion.

Analysts expected the company to report earnings per share (EPS) of 42 cents on revenue of $21.5 billion.

It's been a rough stretch for Tesla shareholders, with the stock down 41% for the year to date.

"The company has become a political lightning rod," explains Steve Sosnick, chief strategist at Interactive Brokers, "thanks to Elon Musk's key role at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)."

Sosnick goes on to say that a major element of Tesla is its futurism, with hopes for robotaxis, robotics and other inventions playing an integral role in its rich valuation.

And having "a visionary who is busy with the day-to-day mechanics of government bureaucracy is highly unlikely to be simultaneously making concrete progress toward those corporate goals," he adds.

Earnings spotlight: Chipotle Mexican Grill

Wall Street is bullish on Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) stock ahead of the burrito chain's turn on the earnings calendar, which is slated to occur after Wednesday's close.

Of the 35 analysts following the stock who are tracked by S&P Global Market Intelligence, 22 have it at Strong Buy, four call it a Buy and nine say it's a Hold. This works out to a consensus Buy recommendation.

Speaking for the bulls is William Blair analyst Sharon Zackfia, who has an Outperform rating on the consumer discretionary stock. "Despite near-term uncertainties, we continue to believe Chipotle is well-positioned to achieve sustainable mid- to high-teens EPS growth over the next decade."

However, Zackfia believes inclement weather in the first quarter negatively weighed on traffic and will result in Q1 earnings of 26 cents per share and same-store sales growth of 1.1%.

Analysts' consensus estimates are for earnings of 28 cents per share on same-store sales growth of 2.2%.

Earnings spotlight: Alphabet

Alphabet (GOOGL) will release its first-quarter results after Thursday's close. It's been a rough start to 2025 for the mega-cap stock, which is down more than 20% for the year to date.

Weighing on shares has been a rotation away from tech and communication services stocks, a recent ruling that Alphabet's Google search engine violated antitrust laws and uncertainty surrounding Trump's tariff plans.

Given that these tariffs impact several industry verticals – including autos, pharmaceuticals and retail – they are likely to impact ad spend from these verticals on platforms such as Google Search and YouTube, says Truist Securities analyst Youssef Squali (Buy).

Still, Squali expects the company to report in-line Q1 results, though this should reflect a deceleration in year-over-year growth due to tough comparisons.

Overall, analysts expect the tech conglomerate to disclose earnings of $2.01 per share (+6.3% YoY) on revenue of $89.2 billion (+10.7% YoY).
