Macy's continues to shrink its store footprint as part of an ongoing effort to modernize the department store chain and adapt to changing shopping habits. The retailer plans to close 14 underperforming locations in 2026 following dozens of closures over the past two years.
The upcoming closures mark the second year of Macy's "Bold New Chapter" turnaround plan, first introduced in 2024. The strategy focuses on closing weaker stores while investing in stronger locations and improving the in-store and online shopping experience.
Company leaders say the goal is to streamline operations and focus resources on stores and brands that are performing well. Here's what to know about the upcoming closures and what they could mean for shoppers and employees.
Macy's moves closer to 150-store closure goal
The 14 stores scheduled to close in 2026 follow 66 closures in 2025 and 55 closures in 2024. Once this round is completed, most expected early in the year, Macy's will be about 80% of the way toward its goal of closing 150 locations under the turnaround plan, according to Macy’s latest progress update.
CEO Tony Spring said the company continues reviewing its store portfolio while investing in stronger locations. Macy's says early results from its store closures and reinvestment strategy are showing signs of progress.
The company reports upgraded "Reimagine 125" locations are outperforming the broader chain, with comparable sales rising 2.7% in the third quarter, driven by improvements in merchandising, store design and customer experience. The retailer is also seeing continued momentum in its luxury segment, with Bloomingdale's posting its strongest comparable sales growth in more than three years and Bluemercury extending its streak of quarterly comparable sales gains.

Alternatives to Macy's: Competing stores offering great deals
Retailers like Walmart and Target have seen success over the past few years as they've managed to keep prices low while staying on top of trends. Macy's, which sells discounted items and high-end items alike, has struggled to reach a niche consumer that likes to save on retail costs while still staying on top of trends.
Stores like Nordstrom Rack and Dillard's Clearance, and Saks Off Fifth dominate the discounted designer market, whereas stores like Kohl's and JC Penney might be consumers' first choice when shopping for affordable and discounted home products.
